Loreley, Episode 3: The Loophole by Ben Beardsley

Previously…

Simon learned a thing or two about his magick fuckery and we all saw that when it comes to common sense solutions, Loreley knows best.

In the car, driving down the poorly kept road away from the crumbling mansion in the twilight gloom, Simon’s knuckles white on the wheel, his eyes fixed on some point beyond the twisting forest road.

“Sempai. … Sempai?… Sempai. …” Loreley is oblivious to Simon’s silence.
“Where are we going, Sempai?”

“Shh! Loreley, I’m trying to think.”

“Ok, but where are we going?”

“Long story. Now hush.”

“Ok,” she says and broods for nearly three minutes before “What’s in the book? Also, you know I feel like you tricked me back there.”

“Gods’dammit, Loreley. Can’t you try to sleep or something?”

“Well, it seems to me like you tried to trick me into selling my soul, and if we’re gonna be partners, it seems like you might want to let me know stuff like-”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake. Ok. I’m going to explain this, and you’re not going to get it, but I hope at least it’ll let you just fuckin’ relax and trust me.”

“Of course I trust you. That’s why I’m here, right? Go on. Try me.”

Simon takes a long jagged breath thinking about how he can make her understand what she needs to know.

“The book is a grimoire. You do know what a grimoire is?”

“Do I know what a grimoire is. Of course, I do! It’s… isn’t it like some kind of spell book?”

Simon’s smirk is practically audible. “Yeah, something like that. This one is special. It was in my family for a long time. I’m not sure how God Lord Shitbag back there got his hands on it, but it’s the only way out.”

“Out of what?”

Simon turns left onto an unused stretch of highway and drives on in silence.

“Out of what?”

“What?”

“The book. It’s the only way out of-”

“This universe.”

“I don’t get it.”

“I told you.”

“But it’s my book now?”

“Not exactly. You’re certainly not qualified to use it.”

“But you can’t touch it.”

“So?”

“So teach me how to use it. Are you laughing? Don’t laugh at me! I’m serious! I don’t see what choice we have.”

“Yeah. We’re going to see someone about that now.”

“Who?”

“Dammit, Loreley. Trust me. I know what I’m doing. We’ll be fine. I don’t think that thing owns the book. I don’t think it was his to sell. Either way, if we do this right we won’t be anywhere near here when the debt comes due.”

“As usual, I have no idea-”

“Loreley, just trust me. It’s better this way.”

The highway merges with another one, and now they pass occasional cars and delivery trucks.

“Loreley.”

“Yes, Sempai?”

“I need you to keep your eyes open for a place called the Sunshine Motel. If we’re lucky, it will appear somewhere on the right.”

“Can’t you use the navi?”

“Loreley. It’s not on maps. Just keep your eyes-”

“Is that it? Yup! There it is! Up ahead on the right!”
