Trumpocalypse Now: The New American Fascism

Still not understanding why we’re calling him the Orange Hitler? The above is straight from the President-Elect’s Twitter feed. Now, let me put some new wrinkles in your gray matter.

Hitler was a nationalist, among other things. He rose to power on a wave of disenfranchised German citizens. They put him into power because they believe he stood for change and he would make their nation great again. He jailed those who disrespected the national symbols like flags. He deported immigrants who had long been adding to the economy of Germany. He pushed an ideology of racial purity. His focus was always to eliminate the Jewish “threat.” 6+ million Jews died. Millions more died in the war that resulted from his actions.

If you can’t draw the parallels here, if you can’t put two and two together, if you cannot see history trying to repeat itself, then I pose this question to you. Are you blind or do you just not care?

Donald J. Trump is a threat to our nation, the most clear and present danger we have faced since the 1940’s. He is a half-witted demagogue who lusts for power. The men and women who will serve on his administration are little more than white nationalist Neo-Nazis. They are not the “Alt-Right.” They are Nazis. They are racists. They are bigots. They are sexists. They don’t believe in science, and here’s the kicker for you, they don’t believe in your God either. If you think American Christianity is going to be a survivor in all this, then you are mistaken. Unless you’re talking about an evil version who wants to get back to some of that good ole fashion lynching of Negroes and other races that don’t have lily-white asses.

Look, I’ve been to Muslim countries. Yes, their culture is very different from ours and they have some supreme nut-jobs that want to do us harm in the name of religion. Said nut-jobs don’t even account for 1% of the 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide. Most of those people aren’t anymore affluent than you are and, in fact, most are very poor. These people are just people. They want their kids to have a better life than they have. They want their loved ones to be safe. While there are things about their culture that I don’t agree with, such as their treatment of women, they aren’t that different from us. Things like that can change if we work on it though. Mass murder can’t be changed. Eradicating a group of people is called genocide. That’s the kind of murder that doesn’t just rest on one person’s shoulder. It rests on all of us.

Please, look beyond your own personal desires. I know life is tough out there and you’re struggling to pay your bills. I know you didn’t want business as usual in the White House. I get it. I really do. It’s frustrating when you feel that the values you’ve cherished for your entire life seem to be fading. This isn’t how you do it though and this isn’t the man who will do it. Do you really want this to be your legacy? Hate? Racism? The destruction of the U.S. Constitution to serve at the purpose of making nefarious people more powerful?

Four years is what we have. We’re going to see one way or another what will happen. I hope I’m wrong and I hope all we’re faced with is an inept and ineffectual President. Yes, our economy will go to shit (20 million Trump voters are well on their way to losing time and a half holiday pay already and Medicaid changes in Kentucky will leave thousands without health care) but at least maybe we can avoid a world war. I truly hope those that say I’m being an alarmist are right.

To let down our guard, though, is foolish. Emperors and Dictators only rise when we stop guarding the tower. Who watches the watchmen? We do. It is our responsibility to be not only active participants in the political machine of our nation but to also remain vigilant against those who would seek to destroy or pervert our Republic. No longer are we in a position where we can simply bury our heads in the sand and hope everything turns out okay.

We have a man who has no concept of the way our democracy works. He doesn’t seem to understand that he doesn’t get to make laws. He doesn’t seem to understand that you can’t just walk in and repeal laws. He doesn’t understand why he needs to attend intelligence briefings. Basically, he has no idea what the job entails and he is dangerously ignorant of our political process.

Dangerously ignorant…yes, I believe that’s the best way to describe Donald J. Trump and all the minions he’s looking to appoint to key positions. We have climate deniers, crony capitalists, science deniers, and blatant racists. These people are seeking to serve personal agendas instead of one that benefits all Americans. They envision an America resurrected in the image of the 1950’s mentality, where blacks and other non-white races know their place, women keep their mouths shut, and white men are in charge. We are slipping backwards instead of moving forward.

In the end, it is up to us, all of us, to be wary of what may come over the course of the next four years. Giving up isn’t an option when human lives are quite literally at stake.
